Head Start is a federal program that promotes the school readiness of children from ages three to five from low-income families by enhancing their cognitive, social, and emotional development.

Family Engagement

Parent and Family Engagement in Head Start is about building strong relationships between parents and their children, as well as ongoing learning and development. Families are involved in every aspect of our program. They are invited to participate in classroom learning activities, to meet monthly for training and planning, and encouraged to serve on Policy Council and Parent Committees where they can be active in decision making for the program.

How to Apply

Please note the application is NOT complete until you speak/meet with a Family Engagement Specialist to finalize your child’s application.

  • Children must be 3 or 4 years old by August 15
  • Applications for enrollment are taken all year
  • Enrollment opportunities are available for children with disabilities

    Eligibility Criteria

    • Families who meet federal income guidelines
    • Foster children
    • Families experiencing homelessness
    • Families who receive SNAP, Families First, or SSI
    • Children in the custody of grandparents or other relatives
    • Children with a diagnosed special need/disability

    The Program Offers

    School Readiness

    The program promotes language and reading skills, socialization and emotional development, learning skills, math and science knowledge and practice with fine & gross motor skills.

    Families

    Head Start parents and guardians can serve as volunteers in the classroom. They can serve on Policy Council and attend monthly parent meetings and family engagement events.

    Disability

    Our program extends services to children with disabilities. Those include, but are not limited to, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, developmental delays, emotional or behavioral disorders, autism, learning disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, as well as health, hearing, speech, language, visual, and orthopedic impairments.

    Health Services

    We ensure comprehensive care by conducting screenings for blood lead levels, developmental milestones, health history, hearing, physical exams, speech, vision, and growth assessment for every child. Additionally, we coordinate with families and medical providers to develop specialized care plans for children with medical conditions. Our support extends to assisting families with transportation, insurance coverage, and establishing medical and dental provider homes.

    Social Services

    Our program offers support to families in achieving goals such as housing stability, continuing education, reading skills, financial planning workshops, and employment readiness training.

    Nutrition

    Our program is committed to serving healthy meals to children. Our goal is to help families and children establish better nutritional habits. We also support children with special dietary needs or religious dietary practices.
